Epson perfection v550 reviews software#
After removing the previous EPSON V500 software I installed the V550 without issue on a Windows 7 PC. Otherwise, the software and user interface operate just like the V500. Also, the feature to scan documents into word-searchable images seems to be part of the separate but included ABBYY software (v9.0), rather than an checkbox option within the EPSON SCAN software that used ABBYY (v6.0) during scanning. The V550 differs from the V500 in the way you load film and photos onto the scanning glass, using a plastic frame that snaps into the lid rather than a frame that rests on the glass directly. Plus, Best Buy offered a sale discount of $20 and a price match discount of $14. The EPSON V550 seemed to be the go-to scanner in the marketplace for home/small office use based on reviews. My previous EPSON Perfection V500 just up and died suddenly after only a few years of light use, so I wanted a replacement photo scanner with similar features and pricing. Hopefully I won't have too many more massive projects or this thing might just get tossed out a window. There's no real middle of the road when it comes to a dedicated PHOTO scanner. Honestly, I probably should have just returned this thing, but I need a photo scanner and the next one up is hundreds of dollars more. I didn't experiment with the slide scanner, so I have no feedback to give on that component. It just was so inconsistent that it made me want to poke my eyes out. Overall though, when this thing worked, it did work well. Old photos looked really nice! The problem is that it didn't autocorrect all of them, which I found annoying, but I just didn't have the time to do each one individually or to upload them to Lightroom and tackle them that way. It also has a color correct option that's actually pretty good. It does have a few good qualities, like being able to customize settings (which has a small learning curve). I ended up overwriting a bunch of pictures because I didn't realize this was happening at first. This means you have to start another set with a different name. The third issue I realized is that the file numbering only goes to 999.

And nothing at all changed- same size photos as the 5 or 6 previous batches, but BAM! It decides to forget how to work. So you'd be happily scanning along and all of a sudden it decides to start combining images.then you have to pull them off and start over. (Usually I would only be able to do 3 at a time.) I'm talking like old 3×5s and smaller, wedged into the 4 corners of the scanner, and it would still recognize 2 photos as only 1 image. I could never EVER get more than 4 small pictures to do that at once and even that was a lucky shot. Next issue: you have this nice, big flatbed scanner that supposedly can distinguish individual pictures and scan them as individual files. I tried unplugging and re-plugging, rebooting both the scanner and computer, and whatever else I could think of but nothing would remedy the annoying connection message. So then I'd have to minimize whatever screen I was looking at and start scanning from the desktop icon. But about every third time I'd hit the button on the scanner, it would say it couldn't connect! It's not like I was trying to use wifi or bluetooth- it was plugged in! This happened on my laptop and my brand new desktop computer, so I'm pretty sure it's a scanner issue. first off, it plugs into the computer so you'd think it would just CONNECT once you ran the setup. I mean it's over $200, how bad could it be, right? Well. I needed to scan over 1000 photos for a family project and I thought this would be a decent product for that.
